Cucumber root

The Bluff Wilderness Hiking Trail

Indian cucumber root
(Medeola virginiana)

This species was spotted by a participant on our June 7 Guided Walk. Yesterday (July 14, '09), there was lots of it in flower in deciduous woods on the upper part of the Pot Lake Loop. It's reported to be uncommon in this part of the province; The tubers apparently smell and taste like cucumber but let's leave them there ! Look for plants with blue, inedible berries later in the season.
